ChitoSAM 100 is a haemostatic gauze with a structure that fundamentally differs from many other haemostatic dressings used for bleeding control. Rather than having an active haemostatic agent applied as a coating to a fabric substrate, the entire ChitoSAM 100 fabric is made from chitosan derived from snow crab shells. The dressing contains no cotton, viscose, or polyester.
The haemostatic action of chitosan is independent of the body’s conventional blood coagulation mechanisms. Upon contact with blood, positively charged chitosan attracts negatively charged red blood cells and platelets, forming a mechanical barrier at the wound site that helps control bleeding. Because of this mechanism of action, ChitoSAM 100 may remain effective even when the body’s natural blood clotting process is impaired.
The device is designed to control severe bleeding, including deep wounds requiring wound packing. Its flexible gauze structure allows it to be packed directly into the wound cavity and placed at the source of bleeding. Proper wound packing combined with direct pressure helps achieve effective bleeding control.
